Novel Ingredients from Seaweed Extracts (NISE)
Natural Ingredients
This project will target the need of novel functional ingredients that will be non-animal based. It will address the need for new anti-oxidants, and anti-UV materials by exploiting the fact that the most powerful anti-UV molecules produced by nature are secondary metabolites of brown algaes (myco-sporine-like aminoacids). The functional hydrocolloid properties of these seaweed fractions will also be exploited as formulation aids in the cosmetic sector.
Minerals from seaweed
Seaweeds accumulate a wide range of minerals and mineral extracts of seaweed are already marketed. These extracts are more widely used in personal care formulations than food applications.
